Goals need to be specific to be called that way. Whatever your mind can conceive, you can achieve. So, what is your mind conceiving? Do you really know what you want, and what your motivation is behind never missing a gym day again? If you only kind of know what you want, you will be easily working towards the wrong destination, fizzle out or worse- get the exact opposite of what you wanted.

Life is always there to distract us from our goals. It’s easy to follow a seemingly interesting path, picking up yet another fitness magazine and hoping for a new and better solution to our problems if we don’t know what we want out of our workout efforts. Only by getting to the core of what you want, you can, you will be able to achieve and move towards exactly that.

Energy costs also follow from not watching your body and depleting your life force. If you want to be fit and keep being fit, there is no way around physical activity to cultivate your energy.

The costs in energy are present in the form of missing presence and focus in your professional life, and therefore sacrificing your creative and quantitative output and earning ability; it can also lead to sacrificing your presence in your private life, therefore throwing away the depth you can reach in your relationships with loved ones, your community and society.

Movies and magazines dictate the desired body types for men and women and we tend to believe what they say, forgetting that the definition of beauty changed with the trends and focus of the societies we lived in and has been reinforced by the media.

Media has the power of showing us images, words and ideas over and over again through different channels. Especially in today’s world, everywhere we look there is an advertisement trying to convey to us what is good for us and what we should aspire to be.

Goals constructed by outside forces

Seeing the same images and hearing the same words over and over again, we will start to believe anything even if it’s total bullshit and what is worse, we will start to sing the same rhymes as the media and start calling each other – family, friends, spouse – out on our big bodies, small bodies, slim curves, large curves or whatever is being said about how we should look.

When I wrote about bullshit in the last paragraph, I was pointing out simple lies the media isn’t telling us, like that almost all fashion and health magazine covers are digitally edited – ever seen a human without pores? Or that most (but not all) male fitness models for magazine covers, workout programs and supplement ads don’t follow the programs themselves; or they attribute their looks to the promoted supplements but are also using controlled and sometimes uncontrolled steroids.

Do you really want six pack abs?
Should your weight really be the measure of your self-worth?
Are your peers’ ideas of the perfect body only constructed by the media or are they real?

I’m not saying you shouldn’t care about how you look or how your body is serving you in your life. Your body and mind play a critical role in your life and your well-being. Nevertheless, there is a thin line between the ideal, healthy body for you and what society says an ideal, healthy body should look like. Know the difference.

How to Turn Your Life Around Today

The day that turns your life around is the day you decide, the day you tell yourself “no more”; the day you turn your back on the old you and walk towards the life you want and never look back again.

To engrave that decision, write that decision down or if you are more extroverted, tell your spouse or your peers about it or even everyone you know; after that, if you can stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eyes and tell yourself that you made the decision and believe it yourself, then you are ready to embark on the journey to change your life.

Ask yourself what has been holding you back until now and remember to be honest about it. Typical answers I hear to this question are about blaming other people and circumstances for holding them back- this won’t help you, instead direct the focus on you.

I’m just too lazy Working out hasn’t been a priority for me
I was tricked into buying multiple gym memberships, workout DVDs, coaching lessons, … (name it) I didn’t focus on the challenge at hand
There is too much information about working out I didn’t dare to decide

If you stop repeating the same failures over and over again and take the opportunity to learn from them, your life will change for the better.

Own It

Remember that you are not as special as you think. Most of the time, universal principles of life apply to anyone- you included. You are not your genes which determine your limits; you are not your lack of talent that gives others a head start.

In the end, the determination to keep going forward and the momentum you build in the process of taking continuous action towards your goals will make you unstoppable; it will determine if you will succeed and reach your goals or not. This applies to all areas of life, in all industries, on every continent and most important- to your life as well.

Taking responsibility of your life will give you the power to overcome any obstacles. Maybe you can’t control the weather, maybe you can’t control what other people tell you, but you can sure control how you react, how you think, and how you live. The moment you stop playing the blame game and the moment you realize that you can directly influence your own life, you are truly limitless. The circumstances will not form you; you will form your circumstances. Or like Jim Rohn would put it- if you will change, everything will change for you.

Letting go of old patterns and hard feelings about oppression doesn’t come easy for anyone. It’s not your fault that you were hurt during childhood; it’s not your fault that your old self couldn’t stand up for yourself. You are not to blame as well as you can re-evaluate your past experiences and make a new decision today.

If you have hard feelings about your past, let your emotions loose in a safe environment, discharge all that has been built up in you until now- cry, stomp and scream if you have to! After discharging, you will see everything from a new perspective and you are even able to let go of the hard stuff and move forward.

Making a decision, changing yourself and sacrificing your old life to build and create a new life will create long term change and you will never miss a gym day again.
